The third to last week has gone past as if a holiday. Coming into the last weeks of term a lot of the house can barely wait for the 3 ½ weeks of holidays. For some this might mean a lot of revision for mock exams but for over half of us, the holidays will be ‘just chillin’!!
For Shell and Remove, this week was one to either fear or even, unbelievably, look forward to. The term had come to a point where the Michaelmas course had come to a finish meaning Science and Maths exams would be just around the corner, this week, revision for the Science Tests dominated a lot of time for many boys’ evening schools. There was the usual college mass on a Wednesday, and then on Thursday the once in a year Mertens House Talent show (see earlier post) took place.
This was followed by a number of sports fixtures on the Saturday, although there wasn’t a full block of football fixtures, Maxwell Pierce led the Ardingly fencing squad in matches against Worth School. Although his team lost by ten points, the opposition included some national fencers which was a real challenge for Maxwell and his team. The final score ended 35-45 for Worth.
In the afternoon, Ardingly College hosted a major x-country event where several L6th boys ran two laps of the Steepo (6 mile course), and some even luckier boys were volunteered to act as marshals along the route, pointing the way for those runners not familiar with the course.
The week’s highlight had to be the Mertens Talent Show. The crowd, consisting not only of Mertens members but girls from Toynbee, joined in to watch some amazing and also some slightly controversial acts. The entertainment started with Hang-Kin’s unbelievable money trick, which is very worth seeing but not worth trying to figure out because you just won’t get it!!
Ryan and Leon’s ‘dinner for two’ involved a very interesting breakdown in communication between Leon and his ‘hands’.
Everyone was readily entertained by Summers’, Jonahs’, Ollie’s and Henry’s video of trying to figure out what to do for the talent show.
James Wright showed us a trick that we couldn’t figure out how to do and Dario and Louis were involved in an eating competition.
The combined Gangnam style dance performed by Timmy, Sam, Nik and eventually Paul (as he couldn’t resist the lure of joining in), struck the crowd well but in the end Ollie CM and Scott claimed first prize with their masterful performance of ‘fatal beatings’. This was less controversial than last year’s performance and some critics think Mr. Curran’s very visible red and yellow cards might have had an effect to some extent.
Paul, our MC for the evening was absolutely superb and entertained us during the short breaks and even occasionally joining in on one or two of the acts when he felt the need!
Mertens has had another busy yet fascinating week. But isn’t it always in Mertens?
