Mertens' Fencers star in win over Eastbourne...

What a jolly good day for our fencers!  3 teams travelled to Eastbourne College yesterday afternoon but it was the opposition who were roundly despatched.

RESULTS

6th Form Foil (Josh Hardy, Maxwell Pierce and Sam Sheridan) won .... 45:28
Upper School Foil (Toby Brann, Alec Watson & Lucas Williamson) won .... 45:11
Girls Foil (Polina Popova, Kate hughes and Daniel Bedford) won .... 45:9

In the 6th form foil team, Sam Sheridan made his debut and after finding the going tough against the opposition captain soon settled in to the swing of things scoring well in the next 2 games   Team captain Josh Hardy maintained his excellent form with a +16 and, ably assisted by Maxwell Pierce (+5), developed a commanding lead from early on such that the victory was never in any doubt.

Nor was victory in any doubt in either of the other two games.  So relatively strong were our sides and confident too, that the opposition did not trouble the scorers much.  In the Upper School foil team, Alec Watson (+13) and Lucas Williamson (+11) stepped up to fence in an older age category alongside team captain Toby Brann (+10) but still won resounding victories.  In the Girls foil team, captain Polina Popova (+12) got her first chance this season to fence foil against girls.  All those matches against 6th form boys have left her with steely determination and quick reaction speed.  She was ably supported by the erstwhile Kate Hughes (+12) who took an afternoon off from sabre to poke her opponents with a foil instead...which she did such precision and great ability!

And so on to next week!  Saturday 15th November will see us host Charterhouse. We expect the quality of their fencing to be high.
